We believe our gas power plants can continue to create reliable power without emitting greenhouse gases. We’ll change the fuel they use, likely into sources like biofuels, biodiesel or other renewable sources.
Next
Replacing or using new fuel sources for our gas power plants is a significant part of how we’ll reach zero emissions. We plan to replace 2 power plants with renewable and storage resources and retool the remaining 3 with proven renewable fuel technologies.

Hydro power will continue to be a vital part of our carbon-free plan. We own and operate 9 powerhouses in the Upper American River. This means the same “fuel” is used over and over as water flows downstream from one powerhouse to the next. About 20% of our power comes from carbon-free hydro generation.

Utility-scale solar, like the large solar panel fields at our Ranch Seco facility, is about 1/3 the cost of rooftop solar. Additionally, the panels can be oriented to maximize production. By 2030 we plan to add enough utility-scale solar to power approximately 330,000-450,000 homes.

Our customers’ investment in rooftop solar technology is important to helping us reach zero carbon. As the cost for solar decreases, more customers will likely adopt this technology. We expect the amount of solar generation from rooftop solar will double or triple between now and 2030.

The Delta Breeze does more than help cool down our hot summer days – it also helps generate power. Our Solano Wind Farm currently produces enough electricity to power more than 63,000 homes per year. We’ll expand our wind power generation in Solano and other locations, adding enough power for 90,000-150,000 homes.

Extra solar power produced on sunny days can be stored for use later in the evening when the sun isn’t shining. Battery storage can also quickly inject or extract energy to match supply to demand. We will invest in utility-scale battery storage and to partner with customers to leverage their on-site batteries.

A virtual power plant consists of many small devices (batteries, electric hot water heaters, thermostats or EVs, for example) often owned by customers and located at their homes and businesses. When operated and managed together in a coordinated way, they can become an alternative to a conventional utility-scale power plant.

Electrification of buildings and vehicles is a priority as these areas are the largest carbon emitters in California. This includes:
• Upgrading gas appliances with high-efficiency
electric appliances in existing homes and
businesses
• Construction of new all-electric smart homes
• Improving EV charging solutions and offering
incentives for used EVs

Emerging technologies play an important role in our path to be carbon free by 2030. By conducting pilot programs and participating in different projects, we’ll prioritize and scale the technologies that will have the largest impact on carbon reduction.
